The LMT is a good weapon and gucci with the acog and rmr, it looks cool and it functions and shoots well, only thing I don't like is the sharp corners and the nooks and crannies like the foregrip that is hard to clean. It also seems really counterintuitive to have to cock the action to apply the safety but I guess that's just how it is.

I think it was a foregone conclusion that NZ would go with an ar platform for international compatibility if nothing else. Personally I liked the feel and balance of the steyr more, it had a horrible trigger but if they had gone as the Australians did and put a rail and acog on it would probably have shot as well.

Is the criticism towards the AUG based more on them being shot to shit and falling apart? The one's I've messed with in the civilian world have been very capable and reliable, very accurate with a good optic. My good mate loved his when he was serving. I'd buy one if aunty would let me.

Yes that's probably bang on, most NZDF ones were pretty tired

Yes I think my mates one was an Austrian made one and he remarked that they were better than the Aussie ones. The only real gripe I had with the limited time I had was splitting my nuckles open when charging the flat top versions.

I shot service rifle with an ex army guy that had a flat top with a Leupold HAMR on it and he was very competitive with it.

I have a long list of gripes but then I am a lefty and I had used a lot of different rifles before the IW Steyr. I found that a few of NZDF who had learned to shoot with one liked them but most people who shot outside in civi street didn't. Interestingly my first issue one was Austrian made and it was definitely made better than an Australian one.
Tried shooting a Steyr while wearing body armor? No LOP adjustment.
    The trigger was definitely horrible.
    donuts scope = horrible
jammed something chronic with sand (dirt wasn't such a problem)
plastic charging handle breaking off it's steel sprue
lots of small parts to loose in a feild strip
    horrible safety
but cap retention thingee = horrible
mag change and chamber behind your face so more difficult to visualy check

in a vehicle or urban combat where lenght is crucial they definitely have some good points

The MARS, or its predicessors, were commercial rifles long before it was a military rifle.

Our rifles were inherently evil. They had to be bent.

Eh, the tax payers were overwhelmingly in favour of the buy back apparently, so they can wear it.
