Just because they are still in service doesn't necessarily mean they are the best option. They are a good rifle don't get me wrong but, due to many other factors and considerations at the operator, unit and logistic level there are better.

As has been said, they are a good Rifle but from another time.
They are too heavy when set up with an optic and too long for CQB,the weight of the ammo+magazines+what a modern Solider has to carry these days means they are just too much gun.
"Sixty percent of the time,it works every time"
Yea too much gun - you never wanna be outgunned aye
No discussion about the elephant gun would be complete without an war story from Vietnam
Two guys take cover on either of a large deadfall tree during a contact
1 VC with an AK on 1 side & a kiwi on the other side with an SLR
VC attempts to shoot kiwi by firing his AK gangsta styles over the tree
Kiwi guy shoots VC through the tree

Yes. Some still argue that a known average shooter like LH Oswald could not have gotten off three well aimed shots in 5.8 secs with low end Italian bolt action, without even a decent scope.
Could of course have used a muzzle loader with similar effect.
