Thread: Moving up in calibre - 300 Win, 300 WSM, 7mm RM or there?

Cheers for all the input on this thread. After reading all the info, here is a shortened list of requirements for the setup
- use factory ammo (availability and performance to consider)
- suppressor not brake
- moderate recoil
- not too concerned for weight of rifle but prefer slightly shorter barrel length for walking through bush/scrub with it on the side of my pack

I suppose there are multiple calibres which tick these boxes. Will head into Rivers to Range’s this weekend to see what they have on offer

If you want a shorter barrel and factory ammo 1 of the 6.5 cal take your pick.
I know which one I would choose.

I’ve had them all… of the ones currently being discussed still have 300win, 7 rem, 6.5prc and 7prc.

7prc ticks a heap of Boxs

6 months ago i was in the same boat but decided to get a full seperate setup for long range stuff ended up with the exact setup i wanted as new condition for $2400 on trademe set up was worth just shy of $5000 so would also check out the second hand market as there have been alot of awesome deals about

What caliber is that one @Carbine ? Is that a Bergara hunter? One of those on TM atm in 300WSM but pickup only in Wairarapa. Def will be looking 2nd hand

Thinking about it mate its yours for 2500$ -minus bipod, with 27x rounds of 180gr Norma Bondstrike

Thanks for all the info on this thread. After an assessment of my situation as a whole, I ended up going for a new Tikka in 7mm RM.
So new setup will be
Tikka 7mm RM
Full 24 inch barrel (can cut down later if I find it too long)
Shooting Federal Premium 155g Terminal Ascent

Burris Signature 3-15x44 Illuminated Reticle
DPT suppressor (from my .270)
Bipod + Sling

The debut will be on the west coast chasing Chamois on Waitangi weekend. To say im stoked would be an understatement!

Sweet set up mate hopefully serves you well, what suppressor do you have on your 270? its has to be the magnum version to handle the rem mag fyi.

Awesome decision. But the point I’d make if I saw this thread earlier, is by the time I was 50 I’d owned or used most calibres. It’s fun playing around with different rifles and blaming calibre selection on your latest stuff up. :-)
You’ve chosen a great calibre, I’ve owned two and my first one was my first ‘long range rifle’ and I too traded up from a .270. No regrets it opened up a whole new world and I never looked back.
My personal opinion of long range shooting is that the glass is a more important decision than calibre. It’s where the projectiles hit that seems to matter more than what size/shape it is.
This point is well proven by the .223 thread.
Enjoy the new shooter, you won’t be disappointed.

7rm, good choice. At least you can find ammo everywhere.
The great thing about the arrival of 7prc, is that there might be plenty of good 7rm for sell around :-)

Yea it is the magnum one which is great, saves some $$
