Thread: Multiple addresses for security

I'm sure this has come up before, but I can't find it for the life of me. The search function is pretty limited.

I'd like to have my security verified at two addresses, as I spend time at both. One is a family member's who has no FAL in NZ, but has had pistol and various licenses overseas in multiple countries. He hasn't got one here as he's not into hunting, but had shorts for security purposes. "I came to NZ specifically not to have to carry a bleedin' gun ever again" - his words. However, 20 years on he's started making noises that he wouldn't mind doing a bit of practical pistol shooting just to keep me suitably chastened hahaha

I will be spending quite a bit of time living between the two addresses, and can't be arsed having to go and retrieve a firearm on the day I need it, to then go back the other way down country to go use it. I also would like to take all practicable steps to keep up my end of the deal re keeping endorsed firearms safe from dickheads, thieves and wrongdoers. I don't mind spending the money to get a decent safe to put in at his place, in fact I already have one to go in anyway, just for my peace of mind (staying there and want to go out for dinner and lock a 22 bolt action away for instance, as opposed to an E cat etc). What are the chances of the police allowing me BCE verified security at both places? I will be the only one able to access the safes, and the other place has arguably slightly better security too, as I have more scope to make it 'safe' at this freehold house than my renter..

I have been trying to think why this would not be allowed but I can't come up with anything so give it a go and ask the question of a firearms officer.

Yeah I know what you mean. Was wondering if any particular circumstance would allow or disallow, so I could make sure that it wasn't a problem before I asked

The only reason I can think of for them to say no is because their shitty database doesn't allow multiple addresses to be assigned to your name or FAL number.

And possible " Fuck you, that's why " attitude I've had off a minority. Being a suitable person and trying to do the right thing can often be found waaaay down the list, hence trying to ID potential problems before they arise

Secondhand but a club member has had his workplace endorsed as a site where he has put a B-cat safe in and the cops have cleared it

His work is just down the road from the club and his house is up the line a ways

I think the main thing is how you approach the FO about it - softly softly catchy monkey..

Would they be the same with A cat as well? Can't afford a house in the fuckup they call Auckland but need to be here for work so it looks like I'm buying me a bach down the line. It will need a safe for when I'm there but won't be storing anything long term.

It couldn't do any harm to emphasise that it would mean less transport in the car as that helps get the firearms "off the road" which would be where they are potentially at greater risk. And also I would suggest that they are not left at the secondary address when you are at the other one....

Worth suggesting s the worst that can hapen is a flat out NO which is exactly where you are at now....

I live overseas but come to NZ once every year and a bit. I have a valid firearms licence and the place I stay when back no one does.
I informed the police that I store firearms at 2 locations. I borrow friends rifles while I'm back and when I leave they go back to the friend. The police seemed to be able to add that to their system. Wasn't much of a hassle, the lady that came around to inspect the safe (renewed my licence) wrote down a note saying that no firearms would be stored at one location (where I stay while in NZ) when I am not in the country. No one has checked to see if I stand by my statement but they were understanding of the situation and seemed to acknowledge the annoyance of travelling to pick up a firearm every time I would want to use it.

Give it a bash, all of the arms officers or inspectors I've met have been very pleasant.

can't be any different than taking your firearms from home to your holiday house?

I live in Auckland.
All my guns are in Palmerston North - in a large safe, with my cousins guns (he also have a FAL).
Cops know I live in Auckland and they've recorded my gun storage as being in Palmy and they're happy with that.
The only thing I was told to do was to make sure I have "facilities for safe storage for a firearm, regardless if you have one there or not, or ever will" at the address I live at.

Ask your AO. Your mileage may vary.

That's a good way to present it to them, just making sure I have requisite security at both the places I live. Thanks chaps
