I bought a norinco sks that is sold as an A-CAT Firearm but the magazine accepts 8 rounds and is fully functional with this many rounds, is this normal?

Mine can hold seven max but it causes feed problems, if I only put 5 in it's ok. If your worried take it back for an exchange or go to a Gunsmith and get the mag made smaller.
Not normal, return it to the shop or fit a spacer so it can't take the eighth round

I dont think 'skinny ammo' exists haha
Some conversions retain the std mag and have a lug braised onto the bottom to limit capacity, if it was misplaced you could possibly get in an extra one i guess. I always wondered why 7, made an A class m1 with the en bloc clip a bit awkward.
Gun City advertise it as a 5 shot so think they mucked up a bit.
Are we talking 7 in the mag and the 8th round can't be depressed and goes straight into the chamber? I would have thought if you can't depress the 8th round to slide the bolt over the top then it doesn't truly hold 8 in the mag. M1 is tricky in that I don't think you can have 8 rounds in the mag as the bolt strips the top one straight into the chamber and is therefore only ever 7+1. I wouldn't want an A-cat M1 anyway however, as it would mean cutting bits off =)
I bought a 7 round Spears AR mag a few years ago from a reputable Auckland shop (not GC), just to test them out, and on my first use managed to get 12 rounds in it!
Later I figured out they gave me a 10 rnd one accidentally...
