flip side is some of the .308 projectiles that are considered too volitile at .308 speed are awesome at x39 speed...eg 130grn hp speer or the ballistic tip 125grn.

Went for a wee wander last night and ended up coming across a pretty good buck, saw him about 200m uphill and ahead of me coming out of the tree line and he wandered right out into the open and had a look around for a bit then put his head down and started grazing. I ran out of cover and couldnt get any closer so had to let him walk... frustrating! The old 270 would have had it in the bag!

I have never owned one but thought 200m should be doable with it?

doable maybe, but borderline....150yards is much more ethical/realistic maximum range for deer sized animal given the rounds small amout of weight/energy and 1-2" usual accuracy. good on you Ryan for sticking to your self imposed limits range wise, its a great wee round but it is wee.

Not as wee as the 223 and many people would have considered 200 well within that rounds effective range yet it has less woomp than the russian dude does.

Yea I'll stick to 100yds or so at least untill I have shot a few animals and know what it can/cannot do. I currently have some factory SSA (Nosler) which has a 123gr ballistic tip. I also picked up a box of the Hornady steel case with the SST

Good new direction Ryan, New rifle looks well set up too.
I've started chasing beasts with a Win 94/3030 with aperture sites. Cool learning curve and easy to carry, no fog and fast to point.
Getting closer is def rewarding especially in open country.
    Good luck.

I love the little round it's a great little bush cal in the central north island and goat cal. I have mostly used Barnal or Chicom with pulled/replaced projectiles. Therefore no need to look for your empties.
I have reloaded and it has shot well but velocities are lower than the mil spec stuff and it's powder that's the problem.

Sadly I am now looking for something left handed in 7.62x39

If the 7.62x39 gets the better of you have a look at the 6.5 Grendel as you could neck down the cases you already have, 55SIX have some CZ 527 American 6.5 Grendel cal rifles for sale
