New 3D prineted can for the 338LM

    Just finished testing 2 ODL cans , a 30 cal & 338 cal supressor , the 338 one is larger dia .
Both go onto a 2 chamber AI tac brake , and use 2 vitron high temp o-rings .
Any way heres some pics , data later once the designer emails me the raw data in a spread sheet .
    So they where shot using a 308 , 300WM & 338LM rifles .
Using milspec spacing & correct meter calibrated on site etc .

Awesome have you tried the 30 cal with 300AAC? a 5/8 x 24 threaded one could be popular.

How many shots you put through the 338? and what do you think of them?
Look forward to see the specs on the 338. The mrs would want a divorce if I got another ODL can for the next rifle build.

    Hi Guys ,

The approx price for the new 2 o-ring magnum reinforced 30 cal can is $1200 , I did not hear a price on the bigger 338 model , but it will be more , as it depends on how much metal powder is used to make them , ie bigger can uses a lot more metal powder , the powder is very expensive .

I talked to Bert about the QD design , and he is moding it again from the pics you have seen a mth ago , we talked about guys buying the QD can and mutliple QD brakes so the one suppressor could be used for several rifles .

RE ; 300BLK , no did not use that rd , he has a can for the 300BLK , its smaller than the AI 30 cal can , anyway , I said a QD brake made & can for the new Ruger Precision Rifle would be good .

What I did however forget to say , was I would like them to make a 6.5mm bore size variant of the new AI 30cal reinforced model , I know some makers , only see the need for 223 , 308 & 338 bore size suppressors , and I think their is a large enough demand for a 6.5mm bore sized can as well , and a 6.5mm model could be used not only on 6.5mm rifles but 6mm rifles as well , ie 243 .
So in short I would like to see a version of the new AI 30 cal can , made in .30 & 6.5mm bores , using the new QD mount and threaded for 5/8 x 24 , which is a std USA thread for varmint weight barrels .
The current QD brake can , is smaller in dia & lenght to the AI can , if ODL offered both that smaller original can & a version of the new AI 30 cal can , shooters would have a lot of choice as to what they wanted to run .

    Cheers Chris

    Opps ,

Forgot to say , a version of the AI 338 can , using a direct thread for the Canadian Timberwolf sniper rifle is already in Canada being tested , they are not happy with their current reflex suppressor , it appears it extends a very , very short distance in front of the actual muzzle , and is doing such a poor job that the guys are complaining of headaches after shooting the 338LM Timberwolf rifles , so if the Canadian Army like them , maybe some ODL cans will get to be used in Canada.
A small 223 QD can is also being trialled by the RMCP , on their M4 type patrol rifles , and again if they like them , maybe both the Army & Police in Canada will be using ODL cans from NZ , cool .

RE : the QD design , its at least into the 3 rd pyshical redesign , and it will not be available until Bert is totally happy with it , I cannot wait for this one , as it would be the business on either my PH M85 or the new Ruger , having said that , I will still need some ODL cans for my AI rifles as well .

Thanks for bringing your rifles out Chris! What a pleasure to shoot too! I recon I'm spoiled for life now.

Here are a few more pics and some data:

This is a 338 can that mounts on the AI Brake. It averaged 140.4 at the muzzle and 132 at the ear. Weight is around 265 grams, 233 OAL and 44.7mm OD.

This is the 300 WinMag can on the same kind of AI Brake. It is about 240 grams 233 OAL and 41.2mm OD. It metered 141.6 at the muzzle and 131 at the ear. With the brake only it was 174 at the muzzle.

Also tested them on the 308 and both cans were around 134 at the muzzle. I have a couple of small improvements to make but I have to say, these were comfortable to shoot without earpro and the recoil was negligible.

After testing these I am not sure about making the 300 winmag can. The 338 can does everything and runs as quiet for the 308 so I don't see the point. I have a lot of data to proceed with future mag can design. Thanks again for the help, Chris!

    ODL,
Do you have an option to go straight onto the M18x1.5 muzzle thread for those with the older style break?

    Hi Buddy ,

ODL will hopefully chime in later , but he did comment that he quite liked the newer 2 chamber AI Tac brake , as it provided a bit of a taper mounting , and this was good for alignment purposes , it also due to the design of the back part of the brake to use not 1 , but 2 o-rings , this not only is for good gas sealing for sound Re the at your ear readings etc , but also a sort of friction lock to keep the can from un-screwing too easily .

Even if ODL does make a direct thread on , I think the better solution would be to buy a newer AI Tac brake if you can .

    Cheers Chris

    Thanks for the input Chris,
I see the reasoning, replacing my breaks would be cost prohibitive though.

You would need only one brake , the only other thing I can think of , is by using the hard steel AI brake , you are using a high grade steel used to make the AI brake , as the 1st two baffles , ie the important blast baffle and the 2 nd baffle , if that makes any sense , this takes some of the pressure off the suppressor its self .

I will need to buy 2 more AI Tac brakes so that all my AI rifles can run the ODL cans .

YES , a high grade of Ti , and then they under go a heat treatment phase as well , before being finished & shipped to buyer .

    ODL ,

When you make a production run of the 338LM cans put me down for one , also in the dark earth tan if possible , like your 1st AI rifle can .
