Ok I will firmly place a tinfoil hat on and answer that. You register your 6 firearms today. Next week they decide you only allowed 3 they now know you have 3 too many. Or you register your 15 no issues until they decide you need to pay $100 per year per firearm.

It's a funny thing. Go into a dairy or vape shop with a 3 wood and it achieves the same effect as a firearm, projection of terror. Yet no one ever comes out to say you have too many clubs in your golf bag... There's an interesting thing in the psychology of it somewhere. I'm lead to believe more people are killed in NZ each average year by assault with a golf club as well (ignoring years where the stats are well chucked out).

The issue is with the foundation it lays. Governments love scope creep - what they've sold the registry on this year damn sure isn't what they will be using it for in 5, 10+ years time. Soon we will be dealing with the same BS they do in Aussie. For example one minute a Firearm is allowed into the country, the next minute the govt decides that particular model is evil and bans it. Then they go straight to their registry, find who owns one, and demand they hand their lawfully purchased items in.

My pick for the first scope creep we will see in our NZ registry is a limit on the number of firearms you can hold.

Excuse me sir, but why do you need 2 303's? Why do you have 3 22's? Why are you buying 300 win mag ammo when you don't own a win mag?, oh you're collecting it for you mate down the road that can't get to the shop? Why do you need extra mag's?

Registration is the beginning of the end. Nothing is more certain - it will be a death by 1000 cuts .

Well for a start they’ve already had one cock up, how would you like your details, firearm numbers and types falling into the wrong hands?
A shopping list for criminals. How would you like having a knock on your door one night by a few gang members coming round to fill their shopping list?

They don't have to wait for a data breach for that to happen.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

B, C and P are already registered and would be desirable to thieves. At the moment farms are the obvious source of firearms, I don't know any farm without firearms so thieves will target us if they are desperate, but so far firearms do not seem to be something they are targeting over other easily sold items.

I oppose the register because of the cost at a time when the country needs to save money. The theft issue does not seem quite so much of an issue to me, but this is probably because all the local mongrel mob guys know I have firearms already so I will not be any worse off with the registry.
