Still trying to work out why everyone wants a fast light calibre for a bush beast?
All logic says slow and heavy will work better in close with heavy cover, 338 fed, 30-30, 45-70, even the .308 with 180gr pills would work well.

There are so many calibers that will do that same job. Its more of a what do you want. Simplify and get as many calibers as you can.

Three of us shooting steel at 1024 yesterday with the three 6.5s with some pretty consistent hitting.
i went to the range this morning and was grouping the 6.5 at 3/4" at 2 hundy and boringly bashing the gong at 600 just for fun.
the best thing is it still slays deer at 25 yards as well
In saying that a mate is shooting his savage 7-08 with 162 amax with very good results as well
It just gets confusing so buy what you want!
My favorite sentences i like to hear are - I suppose so. and Send It!

Deer (red) is the primary target. I've always wanted a lever action rifle (because it's a lever), will get one regardless. Keen on a calibre a tiny bit off the beaten track - very keen on a 'bush calibre'. Reality is I've only shot a dozen deer in my life and they were all under 170 yards so not hung up on 400 - 1000 yard performance (got the wsm regardless)... Not sold on anything right now.

Oh cool now you can drift away from the 08 cases and look at things like 30-30 44mag etc etc

For something different from a Tikka 708

One of those Baikal double rifles in 45-70 shortened to about 20" would make a fantastic bush basher!

    Garret, do yourself a favor

PM Spudattack, take a 2 hour drive north, and let him show you his 375H&H Savage also does a Weather Warrior in 375 Ruger

I think you'll be sold on all your criteria

Set up some 6" steel discs at 200yards this afternoon and smashed 5 out of 5 with it using the iron sights, 300gr pill @ 2500fps, really amazed at the accuracy with the old irons!

If he did that he would end up with a 7mm super mega wiz bang for a thousand yards like the forum bush cal.
