I'll second the nikon's. Have 3.
2-8 was on my 22 mag now on sons 223. 4-16 on my 243 and a 1-4 which is going on my light-ish bush carry lever .35cal.
They have the basic monarch (3 ) then the monarch 5 and 7's.
Ps the Nikon is easier on the face than the Leupold i you get your eye a bit close.
They do a 2.5-10 and 3-12. Either would be worth having a look at.

I've just put a nightforce SHV 3-10x42 on my .260, it's a little bit over your budget but I'm very impressed with it so far. Nice bottom end for bush hunting, with 10x enough for deer to 400m+ if the opportunity presents. Decent turrets, they are capped though - which I prefer on hunting rifles anyways.
The only downside is the reticle is quite fine (I've got the IHR ), not perfect for the bush or last light conditions.
@nak i was looking at one the other day. How do they dial?
Repeatable and accurate clicks so far with with simple testing sat 100m. Have yet to play with dialing at longer distances, but it all looks as it should so far.
