There are three 6.5mm options so hopefully your mate runs a Creedmore so you can have the mighty 47. Or old school 303.

The 280ai is an epic calibre. Mate has a 28" bbl and he shoots 180gr ELDMs at over 3150~fps well under an inch.

280ai is a bit of an open country specialist. Best with 24plus inches and can be a bit much without brake or suppressor for some. (me)
    20inch suppressed 284?

I'm thinking about a long action 7mm08 for 150gr elds and 24inch barrel. Shooting a long action 260 which is also in a sweet spot with 140s

7x64 is a pretty handy calibre, comes in some nice rifles too. If you want really different try looking for a 7x65R.

    Don't underestimate the standard 280.
It has become the ducks nut overseas with some serious shooters.

Why not be the same 'incase' you need to borrow ammo?... but I do 'get' wanting to be different.

Bow and arrow? Save having to get a suppressor , lighter than a rifle too. No hard decision on what scope to get or whether you should anneal to extend case life. In fact easier to reload. Just pick used arrow up and use again. From the last western I saw they seem to be able to knock off a cowboy at a good 500 yards while riding flat out on a horse. Picking they must be incredibly easy to shoot and extremely inherently accurate to be able to do that. Admitily a cowboy is probably easier to kill than a big red stag so maybe keep the range to 400 or less? Or a 7 saum and match or out perform the others in a short light rifle

wow really, seems fast for a 180 from a 280AI, more like 7mm Blaser Mag velocity. My hunting mate had a 280AI built with a 24" barrel, he could only push a 162gr at 2900 (accurately). He was never really that happy with it and has just had it rebarreled to 28 Nosler.

I have just gone with a 19" 284 so that is different to what my mates hunt with. Cool idea until you forget ammo and cannot buy it in store haha. Hornady are doing precision hunter 162gr for 280ais and that is 100~ a box. Big standard 280 is pretty mint. On that note if anyone wants to convert their LA browning a bolt to a 280 I have a 22" bbl sitting at my mates that came off his when he converted to 280ai

@GWH yeah it honks but it does have a 28" bbl + a 2" brake. Only gets 4/5 shots out of his brass to so I can tell you the loads are spicy haha. Seriously fun to shoot and I can assure you the animals don't like it

I asked some questions about different 6.5's a while ago and one of the forum members suggested the 6.5 saum. Even with only mild case saving loadings that is an amazing round. The short fat cartridges give more velocity for the same powder loading in the long slim ones.
