Well I've got 3 4-12 Diamondbacks and have dialed them successfully to just shy of 600 yards several times shooting gongs and a few deer at lesser range.

I've paid no more than $300 for any of them, I think they are bloody brilliant little scopes. Reliable good low light.

Absolutely incredible value for the money.

I've now also got a Viper HS-T 4-16 x44 that ive just started using on my 284win. Only shot it to 400 yards on gongs so far, but it seems to track and dial perfectly and I love the positive clicks on the exposed turrets.

Just also picked up an older Viper 6.5-20 with capped target turrets.

In my opinion you cannot beat them value and performance for money.

Must be something wrong with my eyes but the quality of glass looks fine to me. Fuck how good do you need it?

I'm not sure I'd say they suck, but Vortex marketing has certainly done extremely well.

The Vortex PSTs and HSTs i have looked through have been about the same in low light as my Nikon Monarch 4-16x42, which isn't great praise considering the Nikon is cheaper and smaller objective, but the Vortexs do have other good features like matching reticle/turrets, decent milling reticles, first focal plane options and illumination.

They don't make the best scope in the world, but they certainly fill their spot in the market.

Hd5 tried and tested . Great glass good in low light. They have their little quirks but fir the money I still say you'd have to spend a grand more to get better. If you know where to buy you can get them sub 1500 delivered

my experiences & observations..... I'm no expert, but I know what my eyes see. And they aint as good as they were 20 yrs ago - so may be a good test for scope optics quality. I am also not wedded to any one brand - so my views (excuse the pun) are non biased.
Have or have owned a bunch of scopes including pretty much all the ones referenced above - swaro, Zeiss HD5 & Diavari, Leupies (VX3's and VX6's), Nikon, NightForce, Trijicon, Kahles, Burris and .... and Vortex. The Euro glass is definitely a step above /beyond the others & you'd expect that for $$ paid, VX6's are close but not quite as bright/clear as Euros.
My observation of 4 different Vortex's (all Viper PST's - two 4-16x50 & one 4-16x44 & one 2.5-10x44) is that quality is variable. The first 3 were very good optical clarity & resolution. Side by side against NightForce both set to 15x the Vortex's were noticeably better & greater clarity. And significantly better that VX3 or Nikon. Sadly the 2.5-10x44 PST is not a shade on the optical quality of the others. The 4-16x44 (my sons) has been back to get fixed after it lost zero after a bumpy ride up some hills. Replaced/fix no questions asked and now works fine but should not happen in the first place.
I think this is the biggest weakness for Vortex - they are variable in quality - thus why you see such varied comments - people love 'em or hate 'em depending on what the bought. You can get a good one or a bad one, although the "bad" rate seems to be not too high.
If Vortex would spend a bit more time & $$ in fixing their base quality then they'd be onto a real winner.

By no means is Vortex the only scope manufacturer to have quality variation or issues.
The Zeiss HD5 - I have one that is super good/clear optics (3-15x42 w Z600 reticle) .... it was sooo good I bought a 2nd one, also 3-15x42 but plex reticle with dial up turrets. The optical quality on this one is NOT as good as the first. Not as sharp/clear. Good yes, but noticeably different.
Some reports of issues with early VX6's as well, but they seem to have that sorted now.

I would not bag Vortex's ... they are good value for money, have great features if you like twiddling with turrets ....just be aware that the quality/reliability does vary. Make sure you look thru the scope before you purchase it and get it back to store if you have any issues. If you get a good one, they are very good. Just don't expect it to match the euro glass or reliability.

We all want different things from different scopes.
And have different budgets
Recently wanted something light that would dial to 1000, I normally consider the Z5 the go to but 13moa on the turret had to re think.
VX6 with zero stop no go only one turn
Vx6 tmoa, no has silly alloy cap rather than cds, 3-18x50 vx6 firedot Job done.

Spending 1650 on a vortex no way.
Swarovski Z3 3-12x50 moa cap $1700 job done, with a bonus you'll actually be able to see through it.
And is the same weight as this Vortex thing

I have a z3 but don't really see it as being a scope well suited to dialling, not sure why.

Sounds like zeiss have sorted themselves out with the hd5 in terms of reliability in the turrets, the old conquests weren't so good in that department.

Maybe I just stick with my bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16... Good mag range, light enough, can take a beating, dials well....

What's this silly alloy cap that you mention @BRADS ?

The VX6 3-18x44 TMOA that I am looking at online says that it has CDS.

It's cds Matt but not a true cds as it capped like the 6-24 vx6, it's not weather proof with the cap off and it's a very small little turret.
I don't like the caps, I think the thread is to fine and it's something to get lost,

Well that's crap, I was going to get one but might grab one with the Wind reticle instead now as I like the true CDS also.

Seems silly to me as tmoa is a great reticle!
Windplex I think is only available with illumination and zero stop.

The Wind reticle only comes with ZL, zero lock, ok if you don't want to dial past 18 or so moa.
