Can anyone tell me from experience if the gen 3 civilian stuff is as good as the military issue pilkington kite site and Litton nvg's we had a few years ago in the military?

I was on the trial that tested that gear among others and although they were not my personal preference, they were pretty good bits of kit all the same.
I seen plenty of animals with both while doing army stuff. With and without IR assistance.
Has what we can buy now got better than that, is what I am asking?

R93 : Here are a couple of photos taken just before half moon and slightly overcast. The one of the scrub is actually a Wallaby with the sight on him taken through a Pilkington Kite. The second is my son with the same wallaby at left about 10 min later taken with a Katod Gen3 PVS-7. No IR light used in either photo.Name: wallabys nv 022.jpg

    Night vision for dummies

Thanks Tasbay. I must come up for a look at some gear sometime.
My curiosity in some good NV has peaked.

    primo!
“For us hunting wasn’t a sport. It was a way to be intimate with nature, that intimacy providing us with wild unprocessed food free from pesticides and hormones and with the bonus of having been produced without the addition of great quantities of fossil fuel. . . . . . . . We lived close to the animals we ate. We knew their habits and that knowledge deepened our thanks to them and the land that made them.”

After seeing your setup Gimp I had a thought. I know I know I should try hard not to but..... flip up goggles and a similar weapon mount to that would be the shit yes?

The mount that PVS-14 is in is quick-detach - it twists into the twist-in aimpoint base.

Walk around with -14 head mounted on a skullcrusher or helmet for navigation, once you have found something to shoot, detach the -14 from helmet (it's also quick detach with USGI J-arm etc) and clip onto weapon, takes all of 5 seconds.

If you need to take a fast shot, have IR laser mounted on the gun as well so you can shoot using it to aim.
