Thread: Our favourite ever firearms..

This is for all you Remington 600 fans - alot of us around it seems. This is first 600 variant with vent rib which I had, then from memory came 600 Mohawk without rib, then model 660. All shortie carbines and all generally known as Mohawks these days. By heavens I loved this little rifle - mine in 243 for northern bush:

Winchester Marine Defender. Wasn’t mine, belonged to the farmer on the property I shot on many years ago. It was mine to use when night shooting and it fit me like a glove. Loved that little pump. Will find one again some day along with Win. Mod70 Featherweight in 7x57, something that needs some work, that I can put a bit of love into.

Ruger Deerfield with fixed 2 1/2 power Kahles,later on a suppressed mini 30 with aimpoint..

Current favourite is blued/wood stocked Rossi 44 with red dot and peep sight as a backup..can you tell I bush hunt mainly???

I'm not big on change. The first rifle I owned was a sporterized vz33 Mauser chambered in .257 Roberts RCBS improved. It was the first rifle I'd ever shot that wasn't an air rifle (I don't own a .22LR and have never shot one to this day). I purchased it knowing I would also need to learn to hand load at the same time as learn how to hunt. I learnt both from books while the rifle came along for the ride. Since then it has put on the deck nearly everything I've asked it to, and back in the day had to put up with a fair bit of abuse from a handloading beginner. It has had 4 different barrels, changed when they were shot out, and while it has migrated to a 40° shoulder, it is still my deer rifle for the bush over 30 years later. While some would say it therefore has to qualify as my favourite purely through lack of alternatives, it remains pretty much perfect for what I want.

It’s a funny one, really. What makes a rifle a favourite - classic cartridge, family heirloom, beautiful walnut, ultra-modern parts, super accurate?

I have 5 rilfles, and my favourite by far is a lightly modified T3 with a proper recoil lug, bedded, and reamed to .284 Win. It’s a bit scruffy, but very accurate, has a Z6i on top, and is well balanced.

My 7RM built on a Borden Timberline action, Bartlein barrel, T2, Ken Henderson stock, Jewell trigger, VX6 HD sits in the safe.

The 660 followed the 600 with a longer barrel, 20.5" from memory. The Mohawk was later still and not directly marketed by Remington, a bit like the Ruger No1 today. Later still was the 673 based on the model 7 which in turn was based on the Modle 600. The 673 also had the vent rib but in steel this time. The 600 was based on a modified Rem 700 action that had been developed for a pistol. It was basically a bush pig decades before its time.

now heres a question for you earlier Remington fans that has always intriqued me -I saw a Rem in a Taihape sports store early eighties - and have not seen same since - Okay we had the 700 BDL I have one with its yuk plastic forend - then there was the 700 ADL no floor plate -well this was a 700 with a very nice stock and floor plate -stock was very nicely shaped -different to an ADL but I cant remember what model the store was calling it - delux maybe

Both great actions in terms of being perfectly matched to their intended cartridges.

There ya go Bos should keep ya happy - but my old 788 .308 still my go to rifle

I have owned a large number of good firearms, many of which I have regretted selling (usually sold to overcome temporary impecunity, or to finance the purchase of another desirable gun) but the one that always comes to mind is my .30/06 BSA Majestic with a Hertel & Reuss 4x81 scope. I shot a lot of game with it and it was light, accurate, and well-made. I sold it when my kids started high school and needed uniforms.
