Old family acquaintance used to use a factory rem 788 243 carbine. Just had to look it up and they were 18 1/2".
It just shot so well. He never worried about barrel length and if he saw it he seemed to be able to get it.
Will be fair in that I doubt it was used much past 250m as more bush shooting but he did pick the odd one further away.

Everywhere I have to hunt close to home is wide open country but I have the rem mag.

It will be good test the whole rifle configuration out first before I go and re-barrel it.

There are a number of guys that happily fill their freezers with cartridges like the 6x45. A good mate of mine has taken hundreds of game animals with one, using 70gr b-tips or 75gr Hornady HP at 2950-3000fps.

Your short .243 will do this and more. If it were me I’d go for the 85 partition, or 85 Sierra HPBT or one of the Hornady 87s. It’ll do what you need it to

I would be the first to say I don't need anything fancy to make deer dead.

I need to enjoy it or it will never leave the safe.
    It has competition.

I run a 16" 243 and i love it, deadly on deer out to 350 maybe 400 if i do my bit. I shoot the 85gr sierra varminter flat base at 3000ish fps.

Even at 10m i get pass through on reds.

    I chopped it from 22"

Totally understand that. The most practical sensible rifle I own doesn’t get out much, because I don’t find it as interesting as one of the others.
