    please enlighten me on this old 303

    hi guys please let me know a few things about this old boy. I got given this from my god fathers old man and was his granddads so it has history I just don't know it. seems to be in good condition on the outside but the bore is bugged. could it still be fired ? just dark and dirty. could be rusty. also has side flip up sight? any info would be grate Name:  IMG_0461.jpg

    Nice old girl, don't know a hell of a lot about them sorry but I think those sights on the side are called "lobbing" sights? for chucking some lead in the general direction at long ranges.

    Lobbing sites are for when they are launching grenades from them

    Also called volley sights and they stopped fitting them post WW1 I think

    don't know much but it looks like it could be an old long tom my brother had one he restored to fully wooded boer war era It was 1899 had those site things thought the site on side was for indirect fire or something along those lines pretty shore they didn't fire grenades from long toms (could not make out date on yours)

    . I wouldn't fire it if the barrel is as poor as you say. Most likely fired a lot of corrosive ammo and had minimal cleaning over the last 105 odd years.
