For what its worth I tell them it is a firearm if sending a rifle by courier and pay the extra.

My Son's mate tried to post him a Nightforce scope to Canada and was told they wouldn't do it as it was for fitting to a rifle. He eventually got it there bullshitting the contents but it sucks big time. NZ Post wonders why they are losing business well there is the reason right there, along with postage prices through the roof.

I walked into PBT yesterday and told them it was a rifle, they didn't even blink an eye and charged $18 or so to send it to the other island. I'll be using them again.

Some years ago, can't remember exactly how long maybe 8-9,could be longer I'm getting on, the local post shop wouldn't accept my rifle scope for courier to the North Island
They would however, as above, accept a telescopic sight, that's about when the silliness started, funny that they would deliver onto my door step a rifle from a a Gunshop with bolt etc.
Never been near NZ post again for this sort of thing, truth be told wouldn't get anywhere if i did.

Fact is we can talk about it and be as indignant about the absurdity of it all as much we like but it ain't going to help and just make us look pathetic.

We just find away around it that is
A- legal, as we do need to be.
B- Patronize and promote amongst ourselves ,not keep it a secret, businesses that will help.

They don't make Sakos' in Gore but enough of them get to Lindsay Duncan without any trouble and from then on more than a couple of them to me over the years, so, there has to be a way without having to lie about it and risk losing everything

Lastly , there are firearms licensed folk driving up and down the country every day of the week.

Makes me wonder if there isn't a business opportunity there.....

Did I not mention it as such?
Or did I just hang it out there on it's own for someone to grab.

Just use a courier like Fastways or PBT.

Tell them it's a gun so they can flag it in their system and pay for it to be delivered to the person receiving it or to the depot.

I've sent three guns in the last four months and received two. It's not hard.

Gunshops do it every day of the week.

Usually if you dig deep enough in a couriers fine print there's a section stating that if a package was broken in transit then it was insufficiently/improperly packaged and therefore not eligible for an insurance claim. I've only ever (with one exception) seen insurance pay out if it was shipped correctly and lost entirely in transit.

The exception was an M1 Carbine reimbursed for damage after it was driven over and the barrel bent, stock blown out, and a clear visible set of dual tyre tracks across the box, but that took a fight.

Indeed. Irony though is we had a courier (Courierpost) van arrive at the shop (A proper gun shop not a sports shop) and deliver a consignment with more than 24 rifles, and reloading equipment, and assorted other rifle associated sundries. There were even pictures of rifles on the boxes. We asked the courier company if the driver could collect one for return to the sender (Wholesaler) while he was still there and we were told by the lady on the phone that "They do not ship or carry any firearms parts under any circumstances" while their driver was unloading an entire van load to our shop........

Nothing is "hard" until moronic snowflakes become involved....Then "hard" starts to look easy....

I see an opening here for a fully licensed abcdef cat courier to drive up and down the country

Technically it only has to be a business such as a wholesaler etc, as most companies are quite happy shipping rifles from wholesalers to retailers. It seems $$$ talks and if you ship lots, they will fall over each other trying to get your business. Problem is one who specialises in rifle shipping is likely to be targeted by crims and will end up being in armoured cars.....

I think part of the problem the guy n the earlier article had was he labelled it as a firearm thus inviting a thief to help himself. I have no problem telling courier companies what is contained, but to write it on the package and advertising it does seem like asking for trouble. The thief is still an absolute scumbag for stealing it, no questions, but why make it easier?

I have actually given it some serious thought a while ago.

I doubt the demand or economics are there.
You can currently send a firearm anywhere in the country for under 30 bucks and it will be delivered in 24-48 hours.

Also the premise that if you strictly shipped firearms you would become a target for undesirables

Yeah, demand / market wouldn't be there unless you were doing it as a supplier for retailers, your average Joe blogs wouldn't cover the gas money yet alone other business costs and your time.... If all the other couriers stopped shipping them then it may change.

Couriers don't need gun licences to carry guns as freight.
