Thread: Redundant Calibres

Then you have something like this which is developed that bridges the gap between a couple of cartridges and is a little bit quicker than an older American favourite.
Made to make use of the straight walled cartridge rules that some states have over there. If your state made you use shotguns up till now and you could have one of these jobbies instead, you could see how they would become popular. If it took off it renders some other calibres obsolete, but not redundant as such.

6.5x55 Redundant?

Last night. 260 and 340 yards. 140 Speer Gold Dot

looks like a good one to take out of the gene pool before the roar......
how far off before they start rubbing do you think , 4-5 weeks?

The top one (not a spiker age, probably 3 year old) was hard and ready to strip. The wonky one had soft tips.

The top one is a spiker, we can tell because it has not formed a coronet. Often there is longer hair growing over the future coronet suture, masking the position of the forming coronet. The lower one - a 2yr old has a coronet from previously casting his spikes. Looks like he damaged his soft tops a while ago and they have subsequently grown bent. No beys, short brows and narrow so likely never going to amount to much.

Why I didn't think he was a spiker was because of his stature and he had tusks that were stained. But you are correct. Now I look he hasn't formed coronets:

Any ideas on how old this sika is? Shot 8th Dec (with my redundant 32 yr old 308). I'm thinking 2 yr old, as a yearling wouldn't have the bony nubs?

The animal is a spiker so only just 12 months old when shot. The pedicle is still forming and no coronet has been able to form yet. The hard protrusion is unusual and can only be from damage to the spike which has caused the top to stop growing and harden - likely the skin was split and has healed below leaving the upper spike centre exposed. (That is opinion from the one photo)

well that sika is as old as its ever going to get....
