Well I personally am not one to dick around with these toy guns that seem to be all the rage....45/70 bush rifle and 338 lapua mag for anything over 150 meters.
Buggered if I'm tracking a wounded animal. Bang....2 steps max...fall over. Job done... thanks for coming

It's quite amazing how similar a lot of the new cases are to something that has already been. Maybe slightly improved. Shows the power of good marketing. And that boys love their good.
I tried to go as different as possible with my latest modern offering by getting a 6.5 grendel. Falls right between the 223 and 708

It seems to work for new cars... Here is last years model with 1hp more, 5nm more torque and a slight face lift... that will be $60,000 thanks

my poohseventy did it all for years...bought a .223 so I could do wallaby shooting cheaper and with less recoil....
    still love both rifles...
sort of inherited a .308 by default (long painful story) and rather like it too....funny how its slightly longer and heavier than either of the other 2 but is getting used as my bush rifle LOL.
it is a lot easier to load down to do a specific job than to load hotter.....

If I can only keep one rifle it would be my 308.
    Common and readily available.
Wide range of shootable projectile weights.
Can load it down, can load it hot.
Most importantly it just knocks things down at any reasonable range.

Snap shot below from the Reloaders Website sums it up pretty well.

Now here's a thought, pilgrims.......when Princess Jacinda sweeps back into power with a huge majority, and deals to us lower life forms that like to play with "real" guns, by limiting us to 2 firearms only ("tell 'im 'es dreaming!")...what will you choose?? Go on, play along with my fantasy....

.270 and .223 if allowed shotgun too...if not...life gets hard really quickly....both those rifles have taken one hell of alot of animals for me.

when guns are outlawed...only outlaws will own guns

as relevant today as it has ever been.

it sits in cupboard and waits....I dont have access to property to shoot possums ,rabbits are few n far between...place I shoot them its either 50plus yards so .223 gets nod or spookn shoot seeing ears n arseholes only so the .12ga does the job.

Further to this post, since I can't change my answer, my choice can cover all nz game animals adequately , except game birds,(which I don't hunt anyway) , but that's just me and my reasoning.

    Fantasy? Sounds like a nightmare!

A .22lr would be a no brainer for me. There’s a lot of bang for your buck to be had with the humble 22: small game hunting, target shooting, trying to stretch the range with subsonics; good times...

The other choice would be a mid range 6.5mm: 260, Creedmoor, 6.5x47, 6.5x55. All much of a muchness. Low recoil, easy on barrels, great ballistics; job done. Good allrounders for general big game hunting, ringing gongs, and even a bit of casual varminting. If I had to choose one it would probably be the Creedmoor, simply because I’m not a reloader. As a 308 owner it actually hurt to type that

Shotguns? A must for game bird hunters but I have minimal need for one. Rifles all the way
