It has a fully functional and effective safety, just like 99% of modern rifles...

You could also decock it, and just cock it using the lever like GM said.

You can decock while closed by taking up pressure on the lever under the grip and pulling the trigger and slowly releasing the lever Practise with empty chamber ...
No when you squeeze the lever to open it
That is what cocks the action

Have you thought about the falling block rugars? They seem pretty sweet although quite a bit more $

if you want a real good single shot then spend the money and buy a H&R or TC
if you want a cheeper gun to play round with then ether the rossi or baikal

@john m have you ordered one in special calibres or know anyone that has? Would love one in one of the medium bore metrics, 8x57, 9.3x64 etc

No I dont know anyone who has but the one that would interest me is the 9.3 x 74r. The rimmed case was made for break open guns and has all the power any sane person needs without the heavy recoil. May still be lively in a single shot but you never feel it when hunting. Very popular in Europe, Africa, buffalo and samber hunters in Aussie, bear moose and elk in North America and I love my 9.3x62 ( same ballistics ) for big reds and pigs here. I approched H&F about a Tikka T3 in x62 for a mate, no problem they wanted a deposit and the wait would have been about 6 months.
Velocity is thrilling, but diameter does the real killing.
