I could live in Rotorua, apart from the frost. I hear you on the traffic. I drove into Hastings at 8.30am last week and I had to wait at least 30 seconds at a round about. I hate traffic! I suspect most shooting types are probably better suited to more rural areas. Where I live I drive 25kms before I hit the first traffic intersection
This will be interesting, we're in the middle of lifestyle block country now but will be going suburban in Vegas. So long as I remember I can't fire rifles in the backyard any more I should be ok.

So you're living in a suburb then? I travel 54 km before the first traffic intersection and I wish it were more.
I have my A-Cat storage in a seperate building that is only joined by a roof. The AO was perfectly happy with it. I'm down in Reporoa, so it would be the same AO.
.....If it's an A cat safe in the garage would I need to alarm it?...
No, not a legal requirement. However, always try and keep your security out of sight of windows. Also, keep in mind that your firearms are more susceptible to rusting if stored in a cold sometimes damp garage.
