I have a lot of time for the .22 Margolin pistols. They are inexpensive, well made, very accurate and reliable, and lend themselves to modification that makes them a World class competition pistol (barrel weights, Morini style grip, trigger job). My .22 Short Rapid Fire served me very well with those mods for many years, and I had a production line going on barrel weights for a fair while. They are still commonly available at auctions and not appreciated by new shooters who would rather spend a couple of $K on new pistols that are nowhere near as good.

My other favourite is the Ppsh 41 SMG, cheap, butt-ugly pressed steel construction, but super reliable and nice to shoot. You can fire a long burst and still be looking through the sights at the target, something scarcely possible with any other SMG.

Yes, I had a Margolin many years ago. To tame a bit of muzzle jump I put a weight underneath the barrel. It made a huge difference.

I have a softspot for the hard russian firearms.

I had the same 222 as that and wish i could get it back or another.

The ussr stamped shotguns sit stoic in my safe. Cheap as chips but I dont think ill ever get rid of them.

Re Russian shotguns - can you use steel shot through them as-is or do the barrels need opened up at the noisy end?

well THAT is open to interpretation........ and lots of folks cannot get head around the chokes on Bakails...because it reads tighter than full on a choke guage they get all flustered and panic worse than old ducks at a tea party when the vicar arrives...
THEY ARE NOT OVERFULL ....... the amount of constriction from widest part of barrel to skinniest part of choke is no more than any other shotgun bore...they are just skinnier to start with.
we opened up both of those side by sides..well I did one and shop stuffed up the other as he did not understand the above and tried to get 1/4 choke by docking end of barrel back untill guage read right...doah... it will read 1/4 right to the chamber.
I USE an U/O bakail as it is with only two limitations...1 will not use larger than #3 steel shot 2 dont use heavier than 34grm load.......I will use #2 steel if a 30-32grn payload and it kills birds VERY well.
buckshot or solids are fine...any lead shot is fine.
be careful with chamber length..most of these older guns are 2 3/4 but will chamber and close on 3" and depending on load even on a 3 1/2" the thought of touching that off is scarey.

if you want to open out choke, get in touch and will give you the skinny on how to do it.I did a removable winchoke the other month in ten minutes with power drill and a small cylindrical honing stone.... super happy with end result.

Links above the photos are videos of the shots. Second video is 2 goats killed, first is a little hard to see as it was just a kid sitting on a rock.

Any info on this old girl?

I see it can possibly shoot steel down the right hand barrel being modified?

we shoot steel through our ones....I actually shoot steel through the u/o too and thats tighter again and hasnt been altered at all..just MAKE SURE to use less than 34grm loads and dont use bigger than #3 shot you can get away with heavy and small or light and big..... they are built tough and they not hard to open the chokes just be aware the barrel itself will read close to 1/4 choke on a std guage.... they are tighter than other barrels so the DEGREE of choke is the same but reads tighter.
there are very good 30 and 32grm loads out there and they kill ducks/geese and bunnies just fine.
