    Sako 30-06. What's it worth?

I have been storing this Sako L61r 30-06 for a mate and he's now getting out of the game, so offering to me "at fair market value". Any help in determining this would be greatly appreciated.
In terms of condition, the iron is good, however a few scattered knocks to the wood.
Shoots tight and fitted with a 4x40 scope.

I'm not looking to tuck him, so appreciate suggestions on what a fair number would be.

"Fair market value" in this time of Firearms Registration and economic recession is pretty low.
It's definitely a difficult time to sell firearms.

So taking that into consideration... the scope is worth $40 and the rifle would get $1200-$1300 in this market.
I would offer him $1250 but that is just my opinion - some may think it's worth a bit more.

Scopes largely worthless, full wood sako? Might be worth a bit to the right person as a collectible but you have to find that person. Yeah as above 12-1300 would be plenty I would think. Depends how much you want it.

    Way way too low.

If you got that rifle for anything under two thousand you stole it, and the stutzen carry an additional premium. Put it this way, I could sell it for $2500 and not have too much trouble. The chambering is the main thing holding it back, .30-06 is not popular in NZ.

Assuming the bore is excellent and it feeds and extracts etc.

If you offer less than $1800 you deserve to lie awake at night.

(And this is taking into account a slow market at the moment. To explain: The people who buy and sell rifles who like quality pieces like this, are all registered up and happily trading. It's the Hoping-It-Will-Go-Away and the Apocolyptic-Living-In-The-Matrix types who are ducking registration and avoiding triggering events. The passionate rifle guys can't help themselves, and thats who your market for this one is anyway.)

Values on rifles like cars come at two levels, at the gunshop as a trade in or cash sale and for a private sale (which will be greater).
You can get a price from H&F for the first. It will be under a 1K is my guess. Privately no more than $1300 - 1500, unless you get a really keen sakophile, but still less than 2K.

I will give you same advice I gave another a month or two back. Go to bank and get out as many hundy dollar bills your prepared to pay for rifle.go see mate. Start putting hundy bills down on table and let him pick them up when happy to accept that price. That way you BOTH happy. No rifle worth loosing a mate over.

If John Duxbey can get $2500 for this rifle in this current market then he must have some great contacts... and I'm impressed.

This range of prices does make it easy to come to a fair value for your mate's Sako though. Take the lowest ($1250), the highest ($2500) and throw the dart in the middle, which works out at around $1850.
Another way for everyone to be happy.

I think there are a lot of old blokes still clinging to the concept that their Mauser/ Mannlicher/Sako is worth big bucks. That's not the case any longer and they will go to their graves still believing that.

If you can get $2500 for that used Sako John, you should seriously look at importing bulk amounts of them.

I have bought and sold several rifles since the start of the year. I'm not really guessing.

Put it this way, if Tapawera gets it off his mate for $1250, I will buy it off him for $1800 tonight, and I don't even want it.

Really?? In my experience I would rate its popularity just behind .270 and about equal with 7x57. I do agree that it is a nice rifle in an uncommon configuration that would appeal to some, but in the current market $1500 would see it out.

easiest way to find out what it's worth...one dollar reserve on TM. see where the bidding gets to and bid the next dollar. you'll really find out what the market thinks it's worth.
