Thread: Sako Finlight II

I’m lucky enough to have both a Carbonlight and a Finnlight II. Both great rifles but I reckon the Carbonlight is a little on the light side for an all rounder. Mine is an unsuppressed 260 and feels pretty wobbly for offhand shooting. Kicks quite a bit as well given the modest amount of powder involved. Super light and very easy to carry in one hand when bush bashing though. In my opinion rigging a Carbonlight with a supressor and big ballistic scope sort of ruins it.

The Finnlight is in 7RM and is the perfect weight for that calibre, especially if you are going to hang a heavy 30mm scope on it. The stock is not as sexy as the CF Carbonlight but feels like it will handle more abuse.

Out of interest have you ever weighed the carbon light stock bare.

@rossm-96 interesting about the weight of the carbon light. What scope have you put on it?

Carbonlight with a z5 swaro or vx5 leapy in 7mm rem mag is your perfect all rounder . Muzzle brake on for lightweight tops hunting and a suppressor for everything else, job done.

WillB i have a swaro 3-9x36 on my Carbonlight, but it is really set up for Stewart Island bush. Weighs about 2910g with ss optilocks (which are not light but are such good rings). My issue with heavy scopes and supressors is as much to do with balance as weight which really only matters when carrying the rifle in one hand. Supressors make them feel front heavy, big scopes make them feel top heavy (to me). Its ok when walking the riverflats with the rifle at your side. Less good for clambering through bush where the rifle is being lifted around things with an extended arm. Bear in mind that I have a few physical issues and am hopeless in thick bush. However when shooting offhand, that extra weight and nose heavy feel of a more substantial outfit becomes your friend. Bear in mind that I have a few physical issues and am hopeless in thick bush.

Sakoswarosorted, -i read an early review of the Carbonlight by Nick Harvey in an Australian mag (Sporting Shooter?) and he said that Sako themselves advised that CF stocks were fragile and prone to failure if pushed against a sharp object with force (or something like that). They might have been being over-cautious but in principle fibreglass should be better for impact resilience than CF, -certainly is the case with fishing rods where CF is stronger when loaded properly but less so for point loading such as when the rod touches the side of the boat when under load.

Im rough as shit with my carbon stocks and havnt had an issue yet, think people read into small details too much a lot of the time.

Sako understates the weight of these rifles.

jit - take the ammo out of the magazine mate

Jit, your carbon wrapped barrel would account for most of the weight difference in your comparison. Also, the aluminium Talley lightweight mounts vs the steel Optilock ringmounts make a difference too.

I’ve got a 260 carbonlight, with optilocks, 3.5-10 x 40 vx3 and DPT it’s about 7lb. Light as fu*k and balances well. Shot a few deer with it now and I like the caliber.

About 7lbs?
