Have had two Marlin XS7s (in 308 and 243) go through the closet and was quite impressed with them as entry level units. Reasonably well put together, good features (pillar bedding, adjustable trigger, fluted bolt etc) and well capable of 0.5" groups at 100m with handloads for alot of shooters. Have shot many a crapper over the years but the XS7 is not one of them. Good worker centrefire. I'd recommend them in their price range. Savage Trophy Hunter is another we picked up recently for $7-800 - another entry level rifle and a fine wee shooter. If you wish to shoot well on the range or in the field both will do the job without spending too much coin.
