Just in case you aren't aware, with most scope rings there is a gap between the top and bottom pieces - they aren't cranked down until they meet. Looks like the guy you got the scope from may not have known that

Would like to ask you one question as others have given good advice.

Use the warranty the scopes value has been greatly.decreased and may not function correctly anymore.
Don't use hunting and fishing to do your postage for you man.
Email vortex directly and they will provide you the postage details you need..
They will send it back to you free of charge.
As for the rings. Id probably buy some new ones to suit your rig.

Secondly when you go to mount another scope use the correct torque specs, watch some youtube clips (Ryan Cleckner of the NSA has some great tips) or see your local gun shop.
