    Scope recommendations

    Hi all,

I'm considering buying a Sako model 85 Varmint in 223 for long range pest control, probably in the range of 400 metres.

My current scopes are Leupolds, one on a 308 (vx3), and on a 22mag (freedom), and I'm quite happy with their quality and durability. Hence, I'm thinking along Leupold lines, but not certain which one.

However, I'm open to suggestions, and because I'm no expert, I'm keen to hear of your suggestions and recommendations for a suitable quality scope for what will primarily be a field rifle that I'd also like to do some range target shooting with.

    Thoughts?

I reckon a vx5 would be pretty good.

if you want a sweet little scope though, I've got a Swarovski Z5 2.4-12 BT (4W reticle) I'm looking to move on.

Yeah, I would go vx5 if the budget stretches that far, I had one for a while, sold the rifle it was on and would have kept it if it fit my Brno’s keeping the open sights.
Cheaper option would be vx3 4.5-14

Reticle option is important for varminting at those ranges. A fine reticle is best, the Leupold Windplex would be too coarse in my opinion, Swaro 4W is a better option. I had a Gen 1 VX6 with fine duplex, that was a great scope for LR or varminting.

Good advice above, you'd be hard pressed to beat this for the price and magnification is just what you need at your ranges.

There's many good scopes to choose from and the Leupolds and Swarovskis mentioned are definitely some of them.

Since it's going on a varmint/target rifle I'd opt for higher magnification (4-20, 5-25). You don't need the low power field of view like you do on a big game bush gun.

my .223 wears a 3x9x50 vx11 the 22-250 a 4.5-14x40 vx111 think it is.......absolutely HATE the 4.5 low end for close stuff...trying to neck shoot wounded fallow at 30 yards was terrible....but for hares at 2-300 yards its wonderful being able to crank it up...last light I cant use above 7-8power as scope gets too dark.
but leupold all the way.....I dont dial,so holding zero is all I require.

Another option would be Zeiss HD5 3-15x42, these come up for sale 2nd hand for around $900-1000. Or the new V4 4-16x44.
Or Delta Ti 4-24x50 or the 2.5-15x50

If you plan on shooting out to 400 yards on small targets personally I would opt for a higher power range as mentioned above. I have a 4 to 16x on my .223 and the 4x is good for closer stuff but I would honestly struggle to shoot something tiny a 400 yards with it. Something with a top mag in the 20x to 25x would be perfect for long range varminting.

A nice rifle like a sako deserves a good scope. For rabbits etc at 400 yards or further magnification and clarity is everything. A fine reticle is also a must. If it was me I’d go 5-25 Swarovski Z5. Not cheap but you won’t be disappointed.

Exactly what I've got on my Sako 6BR bunny gun. 4W reticle, MOA turret cap. Def wouldn't be disappointed.

Sightron stac 4-20. Glass is good, nice reticle but the dials are amazing. Would trust them over scopes more than twice the price
