should be called 'whats your dream scope' more than anything. scope you are looking at is fine.

Agree with above advice on Swaro Z3 and Kahles but also take a careful look at Zeiss HD5, either the 3-15x42 (I have 2 and they are outstanding value) or the 2-10x42. Also you might find an older Zeiss Diavari in 3-9x36 or 2-8x36 on 2nd hand market if you are patient. Nothing wrong with the Vortex Viper PST in 2.5 -10x44 but the glass is not quite in the league of the euro scopes, but it gives you dial up features and illuminated MOA or MIL reticle which can be very helpful for longer range shots. The Leupold VX3 2.5-8 x36 with CDS turret would be another option. I recently got back from US and was able to visit a Cabela's on my way thru . Picked up a Leupold VXR Patrol 3-9x40 with TMR reticle on sale for US$278 (reduced from $750) ! Great little scope - light weight (448 gm), dial up turrets (60 moa adjustment) on 30 mm tube. Bloody riper deal.

Of the type you are thinking about.
I run one of these, very impressed with the glass.
Leica ER 2.5-10x42 Ballisic Reticle Rifle Scope 50012 on sale - EuroOptic.com

And one of these, NZ new though.
    Kahles C 2.5-10x50 4A Riflescope 10102 for sale! - EuroOptic.com

Would recommend either. Kahles 2oz heavier, glass appears equally as good but if pushed I'd give it to the Leica, though my eyes anyways.
Kahles is mil .1 click and FFP, Leica is moa 1/4 click SFP if that is important to you.

The biggest problem you are going to have is clearance between the scope and the rear sight.

These photos might help you out (Sako 75 III 308win)

    Top scope: Kahles C 2.5-10x50

    Second scope: Kahles CT 2-7x36

Scope on the rifle: Kahles CT 3-9x42

NOTE: Ruler is measuring from the back or the rear ring.

Yes, we had the open sights removed and blanking grub screws fitted on our Bavarians,, my sons 300WSM and my 6.5 X 55.

    It's easily done.

    I agree with you.
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit" at a longer range.
