Mine is not too short but 20" i have just done load work and have found RL22 with the 162 ELD-X the best for speed and no pressure signs and they shoot real well.
    I tried 2217, 2213SC and RL19 with the 150 ELD-X and the 162 ELD-X
I'm getting 2980fps with the 162 and could get 3050fps with the 150 so at this stage i have gone with the 162.

I'm trying to talk @VTR into cutting down and suppressing his 7saum.

My 7Saum is standard length mod 7 barrel at 22"

    But I have a 15" 708 and a 17" 284 which I really like both of them.

I run 162 Amax in the 17" 284 at 2740 fps which still hold 1000+ ft lbs to over 800 yards.

So a 17" Saum will better that by a reasonable margin I'm sure.

Yea mine is I use a DPT Magnum but you can use a standard DPT as well.
I'm not sure about a 17" with 60 odd grains of powder it might be a bit hard a suppressor.

Yep DPT magnum on the 22" SAUM, and same on the 17" 284.

I've had 20-22 inch ones with suppressors and they have done between 2900-3000 fps all with 162's with either 2217 or the higher speeds reloader 17 but looks like reloader 22 may be good to go as well, go for it mate you will love it

What sort of hunting will you use it for, what sort of ranges will you realistically be shooting at.

If you would realistically be shooting animals to a max of 600 yards say, an 18" 7Saum running a 162g will do everything easy as.

    I wouldn't hesitate shooting a deer at 600 yards with my 17" 284.

Of course the same bullet from my 7Saum pushed at 3k will hit harder but how dead does it need to be? 😉

I run a suppressor on the end of the 22" Saum which gets pretty long, so I only fit it once I reach a shooting lookout.

Whereas the suppressor stays on the 17" 284 the whole time and it's still shorter than the original 22" barrel was.
