His $1000 budget might rule that option out. Even 2nd hand.

Any moron knows an assault rifle must have selective fire capability to be classed as such.
So classing an A or E cat AR-15 rifle as an assault rifle, puts you up there with the rest of the uneducated anti gun brigade. Just sayin.

It is not what I am saying its just military doctrine. Common knowledge.

An assault rifle, and to be classed as such, must be capable of automatic fire. A springfield 06 is a bolt action... No?
An M1 carbine is not an assault rifle.
An M2 carbine may be if it meets other criteria. Simples.

ok I am now informed...a sks or M1 carbine ARE NOT assult rifles because they not full auto capable...so not a machine gun or submachine gun its just a plain old semiautomatic ....rifle used for ....assulting????POSRUFA????
or are they are military styled semi automatics??? MSSA
oops no thats not right either as they WERE military rifles WMR???? no thats a winchester magnum rimfire....
so they must be military semiautomatic rifles used for assults MSRUFA no thats the sheila married to Mr Rufa
my head hurts.... I will stick to bolt action rifles based on military actions BAROMA ...sounds like a beer

I have the Howa mini action .223 and it is a tack driver. Only wish I had got the 6.5 Grendel instead to give me a bit longer legs. Other than cartridge choice, I struggle with how good the Howa is considering the short barrel (20”). Also has a (you either love it or hate it) two stage trigger, which I find just fine. It is a lot of rifle for the $$$’s but it does weigh more than a tika or rem.

The mini action is only 5.7lbs, what tikka or rem weigh less than that?

I don't understand what your getting at???
I may be wrong but it seems to me you think a rifle is an assault rifle because soldiers may have used them to assault a position?
It has nothing to do with how they are employed, it is what they're classed as according to military doctrine.

The term wasn't around until the Germans used the STG-44.
An assault rifle by definition must have selective fire, use an intermediate cartridge and use detachable magazines.

And if you wanted to include anything used by the military for attack, then you would have to include all bolt action repeating arms, all single shots, muzzle loaders, ... bows arrows, sticks, stones.

I didn't have the ticket for it so I had to hand it in. I'm sure when they destroyed it it was burned in the office fireplace. In hindsight I should have just oiled it rather than make it incredibly evil and dangerous by painting it black.

sorry chaps its been a slow wet day at home...... what am I driving at ?????
the m16/ar15 are the same plurry thing no matter how much you change stock design /magazine capacity muzzle break etc etc
the M4 is a derivative of the springfield dirtyo6 that came before it..the ruger M1 carbine also dirivative...the ruger mini 14- mini 30 and indeed the 10/22 are ALL basically a copy of what was a military semi automatic rifle yet they are classed differently
a gevarn .22lr can be converted to full auto with simple twist of an allen key....does that make it an assult rifle??? no of course is doesnt an assult rifle is a rifle or carbine made for purpose of warfare in particular a troop weapon to be carried while assulting a position..... a shotgun cant be classed as one as its not a rifle yet can be in same configuration eg the .410 saigas now on sale on trademe....
I see your point its a military clssification..... so a bren gun would fit the bill but a thompson wouldnt????
while we are on what a rifle is called...a short barreled rifle is a carbine ........a BUSHPIG is a grubby sheilah from the shady side of town
a bush hobbits rifle of choice for many years has been a carbine....we now put a tin can on the end...its still a carbine there endith my rant for the day.

Sorry to nit pick but you asked

A bren does not fit the bill as it does not use an intermediate cartridge and a Thompson uses a pistol cartridge.

Not sure how a bolt action turns into a semi but.... ok
