    Suppressor mirage

Hey team. My 284Win gives wicked mirage when I’m shooting strings of more than 1 at a time (inside a reasonable time, load development) It’s sporting a standard Gen1 DPT. I have another on a 308 Gen 2 suppressor which is nowhere near as bad and is not much different a setup. I’m burning about 55g of powder which I think is inside the recommended range for a non-magnum suppressor. The scope is 10x42 so not much difference again to the other rifle I shoot without as bad a mirage effect.
there anything I can do to reduce mirage?
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

A decent suppressor cover will mitigate the mirage.

Beware that a cover does act as insulation and the suppressor will heat up faster, retain its heat longer and cool down very slowly.

This is load development so you’re shooting from a bench right? Would an A4 sheet of dark coloured heavy card left to sit over the top of the suppressor act a a simple deflector?

I seen a guy at the range range use a piece of road side edge marker post- u side down cut to length back over the barrel and 4 holes drilled for zip ties,
similar to a benchrest mirage band or strip only cheaper as you only want to deflect the heat out of your scope sightline
    Bigger Better Faster Stronger

High tech solution: the higher your scope mount, the less mirage is a problem.

Low tech solution: cardboard is a good insulator with ignition temp of 258C. Cut the inside tube of a kitchen roll up in a spiral fashion and it will fit around and stay on any suppressor, add string if you will.

Height above bore influences mirage, as does rate of fire the powder charge, barrel weight bull or pencil supressor style over barrel or muzzle forward. Extra baffles can reduce mirage as will a slight breeze. A piece of flat card attached to the top of the suppressor will deflect radiated heat shimmer out past the field of view.

Have no experience with this. A strip of aluminium Venetian blind has about the right profile...

I had thought of this but was uncertain how much POI shift the may be. I doubt there would be a accuracy advantage or disadvantage but I'd need to sight in again with the suppressor on.

Don’t fire any shots, that’s the safest way
