Thanks. As long as it doesnt blow up I'm happy. It just looks like a small thread on my 270 so my thinking was that it would be too thin on a 308 but it seems not.

There are no safety issues with the 1/2" UNF thread at all. If that is your only worry, go for it. There can be some accuracy issues on rifle barrels with residual stress left over from the button rifling process, but no problem on cut rifled or most hammer forged barrels. It depends on what your accuracy requirements for this rifle are. I've seen bore's open up by over a thou causing accuracy of 2 MOA or worse, but this won't matter on a bush rifle.
