Always tape centrefire. I carry the rifle muzzle down, across shoulders when climbing
Tape every time for the same reason as Micky duck. Stop half the bush stuffing into my supressor
Yup, another one to tape suppressor here. Keeps crap out, some can't be easily stripped to clean so makes sence.
In the rain, I always carry the rifle muzzle down.
As NZMSC firearms safety instructors, we did a lot of testing of blocked muzzles and barrels.
Tape is to prevent mud, etc getting into the muzzle if you stumble or drop the rifle muzzle down. Blocked muzzle can cause the barrel to peel when the rifle is fired. I have photos to prove it, even a .22 barrel opened up like a peeled banana.
The air pushed out in front of the projectile deals to the tape before the projectile reaches it.
If the tape is pulled tight it won't change the point of impact; if loose, it can change the POI.
Tape on muzzle, plus I add a 4 - 6 inch length of cotton thread barrel end secured with the tape. Barrel protected and a handy wind indicator in one.
As others have said, I do it to keep crap out the barrel/suppressor as well as rain. Are there any disadvantages?
So if you tape the muzzle, carry barrel down, and water enters the breech, wouldn’t the tape hold the water in the barrel?
Qe did a comp a couple of weekends ago in the pissing rain. I was shaking the water out of my rifle before each shot hoping it wouldnt blow up
Always taped. Now that it’s mentioned not so much with suppressed rifles. Most probably still should do it.

Definitely blows off before the projectile even gets to it
There is gas that leaks arround the bullet no matter how good your barrel is
This gas is enough to blow the tape off
Use Electrical tape put one layer only over the muzzle
Then a few wraps arround the barrel to hold it on
Completely safe and will not damage anything or affect accuracy
Been a while since I read the arms code but I think I remember it even mentions it in there as a way to Prevent accidentally obstructing your barrel while hunting
Unsure about hunting suppressed if it’s a good idea or not @DPT might be able to shead some light on the affect of tape over the Suppressor
Greg Duley recommends that you do not put tape on your suppresser, cause in a suppresser the bullet will hit the tape before any compressed air, because thats how a suppresser works . Potentially it could change your POI, probably ok for a close range shot.
A normal barrel with no can yeah always put tape on
