I really only shot pests like rabbits, hares and possums.
If you want a caliber to shoot pests at ranges more than 50m or what ever you're capable of with you're 22 I recommend the hmr.
I own a 22, hmr and a 223. The 223 isn't much use apart from destroying the pests, the hmr is plenty out to 250 or more depending on what glass you have on it.

If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.
If your more driven by price the new ruger American 17hmr is around $550 new so it's well priced and a great shooter. I did review I think on here if mine if you want to search it

ok im going to put myself in the firing line here. calm down guys no ones even acting old enough to be a nanna its more like a bunch of 5 year olds ffs ok the question was does that rifle look like a good deal. start another thread as to weather its ethical or safe to shoot possums out of trees with a 223 no wonder people go off and start new shooting and hunting forums. ive said my piece fire away I can take it
Love shooting monkeys with me 223 great tool for the job especially across gulleys.

I been watching this thread
Interesting you should recommend the 17HMR out to 250 and beyond.
I have serious doubts at the HMR at 200, even though I have shot rabbits at that range.
Furthest have shot is 214, then I wasn't that happy with the result
You gotta be aware if you set it up or a 140yrd zero , you are gonna be 6" down at 200 and running out of steam
In my opinion the only thing you should be shooting at 250+ with the HMR, is a piece of A4
If you can hit it.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
I have to disagree totally with you based on facts sorry. I have shot hares out to 260. I have a compensating scope that works very well. Bang, hit, dead, simple.
I have also put dozens of holes through a frying pan of all things at 270 with a steady left to right wind.
I chronied a few hmr rounds and based on that info in strelok app at 250m the pill is still doing 1200FPS so I cannot see anything about what you are saying to reliably put what I have said wrong.

Here are the pics to show what I have said above
Pic taken from rest point. Where the sunny strip is is the pans hanging on a fence, 270m.
I dialled my scope to 270,b aimed and shot. My son and farther in law also shot the pan no trouble.
Hope that's enough info for you, I was surprised myself to be honest and doubted what I had read about ranges of shots taken by others but that's what I have done with mine

I have no doubt that your pretty good at those sort of shots.
I'm just not too sure whether those who buy a 17 HMR can be as good as you.
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
I think it's more about the glass than anything, I'm no marksman and if myself, my fourteen year old son and sixty year old father in law can then anyone can.
I have one of those cheap bsa sweet 17 scope. 6-18x40 but the dialling feature works really well so that's the aim side of things taken care of.
Your concerns about it not have enough energy at 250 aren't warranted as the ballistic calcs say it's doing 1200fps so I cannot see an issue not only hitting an A4 piece of paper but hitting it with more than enough energy to kill small game

you need to go back and do your thing
your numbers don't add up
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Beause there isn't enough energy left to make a good kill
