Yeah came here to share what Digit just did. Good luck with vortex :/
I'll be the first to support Vortex's product - they make great products at a good price. I just think the distribution channels were dodgy and haven't been passed on to the best substitute.
My battery cover arrived to today from the states. No cost to me and super quick postage.
So far they have been great to deal with.
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Not that i have had any problem with any of my 3 Scopes but i got them from a Trade Me source who i so far have had full support in all my deals.
My opinion is, if you use the right ways/contacts you will always get a better response, even knowing you not always will have/get what you expect.
Try to deal with people/retailers who has a good reputation.
I "love" my 2 Vipers HS-t and my PST.
These days it doesn't matter how the local suppliers operate or who they are I don't think.
I recently bought a vortex scope, none locally so got on the interweb and ended buying from Hamills in Tauranga. Good price and good service but I also could have got the same deal from a number of suppliers on the interweb in other countries.
Gone are the days of local suppliers I think, it all comes down to the time FedEx takes to get it to me

If i could have a full time job shooting pests i'm up for over time.
There are still some things I want to be covered by New Zealand's consumer protection laws.
For some scope brands this would apply more than others.

yeah cool, then you potentially need to pay more to get it i guess.
I keep a lot of tropical fish and 5 years ago used to buy a particular type of food from a store in albany, the only supplier in NZ. they were selling it for $150 per bucket which wasn't a great price but it was what i was paying. In a short time they increased the price to $196 per bucket so i had to seek alternative supply. I found a website that was prepared to send to NZ from the US. The retail, to this day per bucket is $50USD and if i bought two buckets the total cost including freight was around $215 for two buckets delivered to me. So it was half the price per bucket, the fishkeepers forum members quickly got wind of the new supply route at half the cost and now there aren't any suppliers here because they were simply double the price.
To me it's business, we are in a global retail market now so if the local guys can't give you good prices or service there are many more options out there.
I have found, no matter what the product is we get screwed on price for imported goods. Things from a high volume oil pump for my V8 engine, tropical fish food, firearms parts, are all significantly cheaper retail elsewhere in the world which forces us to seek alternative options i think.

But it's been proven that these stores are reaming us more than necessary, NZAR15 and Burley Arms alone proved that.
I dont thinks its the stores, more the distributers. When you buy from a store here you end up paying 3 or 4 companies margins instead of 2. Hence the big price differential.
Because of the comparitively small market and small stores the distributor model works well for the producers as they only have to deal directly with 1 company, not a whole bunch of small stores who can't make up their minds about what they want.
Downside is; we as the end consumer get stung.
If an opticszone type company shell was established here, and could supply internally they would kill it, and we could have some reasonable prices at long last
