Bloody nice looking rifle. I have had a few comments about the cal. I have just always used what i have know and have had reloading gear for. I am no ballistics expert so can someone tell me what the down sides of the .270 are compared to others? i can always change the cal i get. I use hornady 130 projectiles with 4895 powder out of lupua brass. Buggered if i know the velocity as i havnt put it through a crono. I normally shoot red deer and thar at ranges between 0-300m. cheers

No real downsides for the ranges that you talk about..
Personally for me a 270 needs 24 inches of barrel to work well, its a bit blasty, kicks a bit in a light rifle, factory loads out of a 22 inch barrel with 130s tend to be around 2900 fps up around 3100 with hand loads but I can achieve 3000fps with a short actioned 20" barrel 7mm-08 and 120gr pills, and 3000 fps with 16" barrel 308 and Barnes TTSX 130 pills... even with cans they are still handier
Shorter handier rifles similar performance... for the 0-300 stuff...
over 400... more projectile choices with better BCs in 7mm and 6.5mm
but its all reasonably academic for what you have described..... if you want to shoot longer you might want to consider something else, but thats not likely to include the 708 or 308 anyway...
Thanks sidney. My other option was a 7mm rem mag. I shot one of my mates rifles on a recent shoot and loved it. It was out of a sako 75 which he had fluted and added a muzzle brake onto. Not sure on barrel length. However they are more expensive to buy and have more than enough 270 reloading equipment. Maybe i stay with 270 and talk myself into a completely new rifle for my 7mm.
I rate the finnlight 7mm Rem Mag... best factory out of the box all around rifle genuine 800 metre LR potential and still handy enough in the bush..
If you limited to one to do much... not a bad option..
Kiwi Greg is selling a Kimber that he is talking about putting a 280Ai barrel onto .. thats not a bad option either pretty light though and could kick a bit...
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
