5K is a really really good budget if that's rifle only and optics on top? Even optics on top its still a good budget

Is this a hunting rifle? and if so.
Sort out what sort of country you will be hunting, game to be hunted, likely range of shots taken, distance and elevation gain likely carried.
    Do you intend to reload?
And if purely a target rifle do you intend to compete in a particular discipline ?

308win is a fantastic do it all round, but its not the best at anything really.(owned and loved the last 20 odd years)

Spending that kind of coin you really need to think about its intended use and maybe future use, post up and I'm sure you will get some sound advice/direction

A very very tidy walnut stainless Sako 75 308 on Trademe at the moment.

    Easy answer.

Seriously, as a new shooter, as above, I would decide what are you going do, hunt deer? Shoot rabbits & goats? Be a rifle range only type shooter?
Then if possible, get a good quality second hand rifle of the type and calibre you want and suitable for intended use, with equally good optics.
See if you like your new sport by geting someone experienced to show you the ropes.
If you love it, then maybe upgrade your gear later.

PS, my AR15 and scope is not far off the $5000 mark ($4200). Just don't tell the Mrs.
hi thanks for the reply, i mean 5000 for the rifle only not count scope, for me i want a really cool looking rifle, it must look tactical, like one of those sniper rifle in the movies, not really going to shoot much, mainly just for collection, want buy the most accurate rifle i can get within that budget. what would be the closet sniper rifle i can get like the one in the armys.

If had that much to spend??? I'd spend atleast 2k on glass and then have either Abe or Greg build me a nasty deer/gong slayer

...I'm just putting it out there

But seriously, there is a few rifles out there fitting your description. 5K should get you there.

ChrisF would be able to suggest an Accuarcy International .308 of some sort.

Cool, that narrows the choice down.
But $5,000 won't get you halfway unfortunately.

Accuracy International AW308 Snipers Rifle 308 CAL | Trade Me

But can get you this, which is far more user friendly, ie doesn't weigh as much as an elephant.

    FNH SPR A1A 308 20" Fluted, Was $3995.00 | Trade Me

You will want to spend at least $3,000 on optics then.

mate a rifle doesn't make a sniper, the training and skills do, and an accurate rifle is only as accurate as the shooter. Seems like your throwing 5k away, but hey that's just me.

Where is the "fuck me with the rough end of a pineapple" smiley when you need it...

$5k for a movie gun to look cool and be tactical, not for actual shooting
