You need to fit a rail depending on the scope, but if it were me, I would turn it into a dedicated night shooting setup, with a NV or thermal scope, similar to what Tentman has said above. If that seems like a good idea and you still want to put a new barrel on it, choose a calibre that suits this purpose.
Remove the spacer out the back of the mag, shorten the bolt stop, re- chamber in 284.
Would go 22 cm 7 twist if your going to rebarrel.
Bolt face good to go .
Shoot heavy for cal long bullets .ELDMs

I do like the idea of turning it into a dedicated night set up caliber well worlds your oyster how well do those night scopes handle recoil may be a factor
Is the idea for a night shooter to have low recoil cartridges for spotting shots?
What is a fast 22 going to do to fallow (or any deer) that a 708 won't?
Overkill is still dead.
But if you loaded the 7mm-08 with light for calibre pill as hot as is accurate...... It wouldn't be too far behind.
75/15/10 black powder matters
well i was going to say 284 but you have the 7mm well covered.
so if you are going to fit a new barrel and its a 308 bolt face sounds like you need to go larger 358 win and you can plink or shoot goats with 357 cal jacketed pistol bullets or 358 225 gr bullets for cattle.
or as everyone else says drop to a fast twist 22 but it's going to eat barrels faster than a 243. (I run a 243 with a 1:8 barrel) would be great for long range walabies etc.

What's the distance between the action screws?
or you could just keep it and wait for awhile and sell it to a young hunter who will use it
I should have bought it. Been looking for a donor to build a 7x57 Ackley on it.
22 Creedmoor. Tim, there is a HUGH difference between the 223 and the 22CM. I've got both ant theres no comparrison.
