Try a few rifles mate. If the 308 is to your taste then get one but don't fall for the idea that it's the best cal. It's the jack of all trades if you can only have 1 gun. But who said you can only have 1??? That's just crazy talk haha.

I personally LOVE shooting 45-70 but for precision LR stuff I prefer a 6.5x55. I don't actually have a 308 (awkward silence in the room now).

For North island hunting anything from 223 to up would be fine. If you are focusing on the smaller game wallabies fallow etc then 222, 223, 220, 22-250, 243, 6mm,
Also range is part of it as well. If you are not planning on shooting past 300 mtr which is a long way for a North island shooter then most would suggest anything in the 308 family would be just fine. 243/6mm is the flattest and softest shooting option. 6.5 and 7mm in the middle then 308. Of course you do have the medium bore calibres in the 308 family, the 338 fed and 358 win but they are a bit over kill on small deer and hard to find factory ammo for.

Then you have the same again based on the 3006 cartridge but the common ones would be 270, 3006 and 35 Whelen.

As others say here can't really go wrong with 308 and ammo availability and price is an important factor
