Dore Pass - Fiordland National Park

I have looked up at Dore Pass from Glade House / start of Milford Track for a few years and found the time and a weather window to go for a walk a few days ago.

There is a DOC sign post on the Milford Road near Knobs Flat (66km North of Te Anau) - as pictured.

Here are some photos with notes - no animals to report.

Nice spot isn't it, been up there a couple of times - once in mid winter we plugged snow from the bushline onwards only to turn back at the pass with 90k winds and about 10m visibility on the other side. Came out that way from an easter trip a few years ago too, did a bit of a loop via Mistake Creek-U Pass-Glade Pass-Dore Pass. The cloud around the pass looks pretty similar!

I actually did the Dore Pass route to try and get in shape for a Tahr hunt. There are not too many hills around Invercargill like those around Te Anau. It looks like I've missed an opportunity to walk the Milford Track with @BobGibson on the 24th but weather is supposed to turn pear shaped about the same time !

Agreed, Fiordland is a special place. It was nice to get above the bush line ~900m but I will say that it took quite an effort going up through the bush on the Eglington side (East) - and it was harder on the descent through the bush on the Glade side (West)

@GravelBen - that trip sounds much more impressive than my jaunt - well done.

Walked this in about 2003 or 2004 when living in TA. Use to fish the Eglington most weekends over the summer, mainly between Black Stream (Mirror Lakes) and the Cascade.

Its great country in there - I'd definitely recommend U Pass for a trip (Mistake Creek - Hut Creek loop), Glade Pass is a bit of a steeper and nastier tussock-haul.
