Think its likely the ones that fall over /snap are trees that have been ringbarked earlier & weakened maybe the previous season then wind topples them over deer tidy up the leaves , just a guess though but once they start on those trees they hammer them in places down here you can stand on a highpoint spot the Whauwhaupaku above the canopy stalk over most of the time they have been eaten the trees flowers through the winter that's around when the deer start on them wouldn't mind betting there's a buildup of sugar/sap or something along those lines ..did you shoot your stag in amongst them ?
