Possibly the easiest walk ever plus usually see a heap of deer on poronui which is a bonus. A chopper into oamaru public is quite possibly the biggest waste of money around. Each to there own tho!

When you are restricted in how many days you have got to hunt due to work commitments I would rather take a 5 min chopper ride over a 3.5 hour walk to maximise my hunting time. For a walk in trip to there you really need more than a saturday and a sunday or it is just not worth going

Your onto it Hunter , its dead walking .No bolt or ammo in rifle across Poronui ,which is fair enough being private land.If you see any deer on route you're not allowed to shoot them.So a chopper into & from hut is a smart option really.I couldn't do the walk now & very grateful to Poronui Station to allow me to take my wagon to 35 minutes of the hut.Poronui do have guided hunting on the station I believe so the deer on the property are there stock & part of their income . Still a valuable access for many people & would be a far longer walk into the valley if we should loose that due to some fuck wits .

You were very fortunate for them to let you drive through and big thumbs up to them for doing it, hell I would pay them a fee for that if it meant only a half hour walk instead of 3hrs 40mins which is what it took me to get back out of there a couple of years ago. A chopper trip there would be not so bad on the wallet if there were a couple of extra people to share the cost of the flight or even better head to the heli sika block on the other side of the river

The access was arranged by TVDA was a couple of others went as minders for the trainees.
So perhaps I need to put a plate up for the next club meeting .Will sort that pre-next club night.

Walk in at 4am and get there on sunrise is what I do to avoid the heat.

As for Rushy getting there, just strap one of those electric dog collars on and give him a zap if he falls behind or stops being active on the GPS.

Ha ha ha ha Ya cheeky shit. I would just drop so far behind that Inwould be out of radio range. 4am sounds the go.

Just regard it as a forced march Rushy , no problem to a EX-army man even with a full pack .

Looks like a nice hut. I've been thinking of doing a mid week multi dayer, as my couple of forays into day-stalks have done little except provide entertainment for the local Deer. This be a decent place for it?

I can see why people love chasing sika, they are mighty sneaky little critters. Must be a hell of a buzz when you finally put one on the deck

Very comfy hut Nick-D , I was in a tent but was spare beds in the hut. Log fire is a bonus but probably need it in there ,we had a real good frost Saturday night .Shocker waking up to crispy white & frozen billies & toes ,not sure where my cods went .

I remember hanging a pair of socks to dry on that clothes line in the alcove by the door only for them to be frozen stiff the next morning. Yep those bunks are certainly a welcome sight after a long slog to the hut. I will never forget wading through the kaipo in the really heavy frost we had when we walked out of there glad I was wearing thermals.

That frigin river is still like ice water now Hunter ,hate to think what its like in winter .

I waded through that damn river in June when it was cold as hell, when i got out my legs were stinging and I thought my nuts were going to drop off from the water being so cold, another good reason to fly in
