Started my hunting career many long years ago with 243, and just bought another recently. Little suppressed Marlin XS7 which has just shot 0.5" at a hundy with 80gr Fed Powershok, and 0.7" with Highland. Impressed... Will be ideal all-rounder on properties we shoot with some long range bunnies, reds and piggies..

What ammo are you using? And that yearling will be great to eat - very fat!!

    Well done!
Using Fed Power shok 100gr. I can honestly say its the best ammo esp for bush stalking.Has awesome knockdown power and does a fair bit of damage. Anywhere in the shoulder, engine room, chest area and of cause neck, spine and no deer is going anywhere.
Including the biggest of stags, shoulder shots work great with these.Never had one go any distance using the 100gr Fed powershoks. Lots of people seem to want to use 80gr with the 243 but i find 100gr is the way to go, esp for bush hunting and sheer stoppable ability. Below picture is a spiker shot thru one shoudler, picture is exit out the other

Like 6.5x55, some calibres are out of "fashion" (whatever the fuck that is) and are still bloody good calibres, 243 sounds like a fine round
Certainly versatile. Rabbits up to deer if used appropriately. I am looking forward to getting out hunting with it

    Well done. Good yarn.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

243 87grain hornady or speer 90 grain is what im loading for use on goats for some reason the 223 60grain hornady varmit bullet seems to drop them better. Maybe the size of the goat being to small and bullet passing through to easy Big billys drop well if hit in the right place

foxhound......its the type rather than the weight...your .223 will be dumping all the energy its got and the projectile will be .....coming apart... whereas you .243 projectiles are possibly holding together and exiting with a good part of the energy/shock factor going with them....... without looking it up Im pretty confident if you picked a btsp from speer in those weight ranges you would end up with a very bloody mushy mess and no exit...so yip you have worked out the why....same as me using 110 hp hornadies in the poohseventy on wallabies...awesome aye @RUMPY but dont try and shoulder shoot a red with them...wont penertrate and blows up on surface. vs the 110grn barnes tsx I poked into red stag at 192 yards yesterday, took out boiler room no trouble and stag went 10 yards before getting the wobbles and falling over stone cold brown bread.
