    Morning Walk in the Kaimanawa's

Haven't been posting on here much lately so thought I'd do a quick report from my last few outings.
Been out a few times lately. I have been seeing a few deer in a few of the areas that I have become familiar with. I somehow managed to miss an easy shot on a sika spiker a short while back. The dog was indicating hard while we were stalking along a face above a stream. Knew there had to be a deer there somewhere and sure enough I caught a glimpse of movement up to my left, I crouched and waited and soon enough a spiker appeared around the side of a tree. Easy shot in hindsight but I stuffed it up, Bella wasn't to happy with my poor shooting effort.
Last Tuesday I was out for a wander and we came across a deer. Just as I came over a rise I saw a deer about 15-20 metres ahead. I raised my gun to shoot it and in an instant the dog flew ahead and started to chase it, the deer saw the dog and disappeared quick smart. Stopped the dog and got her back in, wasn't to happy as she hasn't done that before... Lets hope it was a one off.

Anyway this morning I decided to get out for a walk. Went to one of my usual haunts with a cunning plan in mind. After a decent walk we were in a good area where we usually head into. Just down the face Bella got a good scent from down below so we snuck down quietly. After a short while we were still heading down the face, the dog was still keen and as I was rounding a decent sized tree I looked down and was surprised to see a sika spiker just 15 metres away looking straight at us. As I lifted my gun he turned to run so I quickly shot him through the neck on the run which dropped him instantly! Exciting stuff. The dog did well and was pretty pleased.
Gutted him out, put him on my back and carried him back to the car. Not a bad way to spend a morning at all!

    Cheers,
    Luke
