Stunning country. Are ptarmigan good eating? Does their plumage change colour with seasons?

Yes, really sweet and mild gamemeat. A guy suggested I stirfry the birds with peppers, which sounds excellent so I'll give that a try. I normally just fry them on the pan.

Master of camoflague, they change colour with the season. You can have a few weeks where they are halfway white and the snow hasn't arrived yet but usually they blend perfectly.

Nice ( but cold) country, do the FMJ bullets do much damage ? doesn't appear to be much blood around the shot birds. Thanks for sharing.

No, these FMJs travel slow and unless I hit bones it's just a hole through. I try to shoot for the shoulders/armpit and when successful the meat is 100% intact.

    Is there any bag limit?
    Are they considered a pest?
I was surprised that you are rifleing them and had thought that were a game bird

It is a highly valued gamebird, hence rifle for minimum damage. Bag limit varies with area, 2-8 or none.

These birds can hardly be spotted if they stay still. Beautiful scenery! Still some nice places to hunt in Europe!

Looks beautiful. I haven't used Google Earth for a very long time, so thank you for reminding me about it's existence
