Nice works Shanks.
My daughters partner has a family owned pine block near Wairoa. He shot 5000 goats and lot's of deer out of it between last harvest rotation and the time the new trees were big enough to be resistant. No shortage of shooting potential in that area. No problem for his family to all get P endorsements either.
New farm looks good, is it dairy or sheep/beef? Can you tell us the size and other details interesting to farmers? No worries if you want to keep that stuff to yourself.
No problem.
Roughly 400 hectares- 75% of which is effective with more due to be broken in over next few years. Was milking 700 cows before us, but we have initially dropped that too 600. Will see where we go. I like the idea of grazing our own heifers and rearing some beef, as we are converting the herd to milking Simental's ( Fleckvieh ).
How's your seasonal pasture production going to compare to the previous farm? 600 cows still sounds like a lot to me, I presume you took your herd with you? It will be interesting to see if they make the transition easily or not.
I'm grazing Fleckvieh at the moment, cool looking cattle. Plus Vikings, reds, Monties etc, the guy I'm grazing for is trying alternative breeds too.
Heard a guy on the radio yesterday saying his farm interest rate had increased from 6% to 11%, plus massive on-farm cost inflation. Not a great time to be in debt.
no shortage of deer around Wairoa, see them on the side of the road quite often
Yeah, part of the reason we made the move was that we could buy a better farm yet reduce debt considerably. Helped by the high prices carbon forestry were paying in our area at the time. We were quite high and wet where we were. In fact up to a meter more rain than where we are now on the coast. Honestly I dont know that I can compare pasture production. We were a farm that was marginal for dairy up north for a number of reasons and the only way we could compete was to be organic. Down here is just high quality pasture and land and no need to go down that path. So they will be so different in structure and management, that comparison is hard.
do you supply westland there Whana??
Hi NW,my son n law up in Pilbara for a couple of weeks.Bit warmer than down southland.Three hours drive from Newman.
Interesting just how many Northern bush hobbits end up down here on the Coast lol.
