Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Awesome effort lads.
Fitness definitely plays a part and makes hunting easier. But it's not the end. My fitness isn't great. I prefer to amble along slowly always listening for that breaking stick or distant bird putting out the alarm call. I like to move slowly to avoid building up too much sweat or been out of breath so much that I can't hold the scope still. Sitting on my butt and listening (thats when i really miss smoking) soaking up the surrounds. When in a hot zone slowing right down.
You don't have to be too far from camp to do this as long as there is feed and fresh sign about. No point stomping through the bush to get to a place on the map you think looks good when the deer are already at your feet.
Looking forward to the next trip report
No worries @sako75 you know you are always welcome to come share a campsite and beer with us (that goes for any of you good buggers only one rule though no bagging the .270 ) @hunter270 heads home to blenheim on the 24th and has gone to his grandmothers for the remainder of the holidays as he is going for a road trip to his great Aunty and uncles in feilding so going to miss having my boy out in the bush with us once he is back home. With me seeing how much James loved being out in the bush it has motivated me to try and get out very regularly plus with the encouragement from @mucko as well has rekindled my interest in heading for the bush for a hunt as I was honestly on the verge of packing it all in and using not enough time off from work as an excuse was piss poor of me when I know very well I just have to fill in a leave form on a monday to get a saturday off as I began basing my life around work and not allowing myself time to go and play. Hopefully I will get to hunt with more of you good buggers from here and my reloading bench may get more attention too.

great write up guys, many cyclists down those ways these days?
Good weather we had and kinda over the Xmas break, which means yes there were a few but they were mostly on the cycle track, passing thru. Did not bother us . Apparently there is a couple of lodges to be built at piropiro flat in the near future. One will be serving flash coffees of the type that auckland people enjoy. No longer is piropiro flat solely the hunters domain.....sigho

That Camo Bivy tent was nice, until the condensation on the inside started to drip on my face
hunter308 is my father
my last experience there was in winter after a storm and a bit of snow. i walked up one of the tracks leading up into the higher parts of the park while two of my mates hunted the base. i ran into a stag that had been spooked by hunters lower down. Easy shot as it didnt expect to see any one above it
