A friend and I left the Atiwhakatu hut one morning about 1972-3 to go over the Pinnacle ridge and own into the Waingawa. About an hour into the climb, We stumbled on a small white wooden cross. On it was written or engraved, in memory of Tory Spooner. Very random! What are the chances of that ? No track just bush bashing. Can anyone fill in any details on the man ? Been wondering for 50 years.
a google search brings up war enlistment records and some stuff about being a local bushman. he died in the bush so i suspect that is where the body was found... interestingly enough no one had seen the cross since the 60's.

I had tried a google search but cant have used the right words.
As on your previous posts on the other F&H forum and my reply to your postings. That pieace of "hunting real estate" aint my cup of tea.
Tararuas hunter......How many man days hunting have you spent / done in that place?
The answer would have to be heaps.
One looks at those landscape photos and can only speculate how much of that country gets seriously / properly ground hunted?
