I've had some rediculous mistakes in my last 3 public land hunts. All to do with my rifle setup and at what I thought were pretty easy ranges. My fat head is pretty deflated now.
Nothing quite like cock ups to get your setups and systems sorted.

It gets us all from time to time. I had an absolute shocker on my first winter bull tahr.. Then last week during a week long sika hunt with my Dad I stuffed up what would normally be a sitter of a shot for me at 150m purely through self induced pressure.

Same with Fallow. Seems to be a late season.

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing, and right-doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.

In the last two weeks I've seen young stags still carrying hard antler ( buttons, short spikes ) and older stags, maybe two + years old, carrying up to 8 - 10 inches of velvet. If does seem more mixed this year. Mainly Red Deer but a few Fallow too.

Ahh Mistakes, gotta appreciate them bringing you back too earth occasionally.

A while back I was doing a bit of guiding and had a young guy along to get his first deer. Got too a high spot overlooking a valley and started glassing where the deer always... sit, before pronouncing nothing there. " what about those ones?'' the young guy asks. Turns out theres 20 right under my feet.. where they never are.
