Sometimes they don't take much finding.

Went out to check the game camera last night but never got to it.

Tilly winded into a big patch of Tawa bush so I sat and waited. Eventually she winded over her shoulder and there was a spiker sneaking around behind us. It disappeared into a gutter but five minutes later she picked it up again and was staring/pointing at it. I got in behind her and followed her line of sight and there it was again grazing in the bush but it had climbed up to the bush fringe. 98 yards. So he copped a 270wsm in behind the shoulder...poleaxed.

The spiker ended up in a hell of a place to recover and I had to drag him out of a heap of stinging nettle. I got stung to hell, but Tilly had dived in after him and was un-affected. I will post a pic of her and the deer in the nettles tomorrow.

At the shot, a Fallow buck bolted into view. His head was pretty spindly (I had seen him last weekend, and he was a mature buck), so I shot him too (155 yards). He was likely the first one she had winded.

At the shot he carried on running without a falter and then after anther 15 yards he lost the battle with gravity and came tumbling back down.

It was well dark and late by the time I had finished dealing to them so the camera will have to wait for another time. Maybe I should leave my rifle at home (or show some constraint ).

First off Tahr, bloody well done. As a fellow GWHP owner may I ask you a question about your Tilly's bush behaviour?????

Does she do a lot of noisy puffing/panting while walking quietly beside you while in sneak mode operations & does she have a compulsion to exercise "helicopter ears" for no apparent reason.?????

Mine does both ( 6years old & NOT overweight) and I don't know if this is a common thing with these beautiful loving animals???? I wonder how far the deer can hear her.???? ( I'm mainly hunting ( warning) Sneeka's)!!!

    I'd appreciate your comment.

P.S. Apologies if I have offended your sensitivities in the past:

By the way; your Tilly is MUCH better looking than my tart!!!!

TG, she is very quiet in the bush. She doesn't make any annoying sounds or flap her ears. But she isn't really a sneaking mode dog either. She only really puts the sneak on if something is quite close, otherwise she just walks along next to me sniffing the wind and doing a lot and air-scenting. If she is certain we are close to a deer she will sit and look up at me, which is quite unusual.

As you will know its all about reading your dog.

Tilly is good on deer, but she is pretty average on everything else like ducks. Maybe that is because of the the way that I bought her up.

Have a look at this. Its her winding a deer and leading me down to it.

My vizsla has helicopter ears, also snuffles like a pig. But none of this is present when in the hot zone, all senses are on looking for what she is smelling, not tried her on any other game as I purely want a dog focused on one thing rather than a jack of all trades and master of none. She is s wee way off being se master just yet lol. Having spent some time bush stalking you can certainly see her change when in the hot zone and all concentration is needed.

    Great effort there too Tahr

Its the back of a farm that adjoins a public reserve. Public access from the front. Me from the back.

Yeah. They all seem split like that. Maybe came from Wanganui blood lines.

Apparently the Wanganui bloodlines were pretty good when they were released. It was the lack of micro nutrients that set them up for the split palmentation (sp) issue. 90% feeding 10% breeding they reckon. Still be tasty though.
